As part of the “Projeter Ensemble” forum on June 26, 2025, Jean-Luc Sandoz, Ph.D., will speak alongside Paul Azzopardi and Etienne Feher from ABF-LAB, Architecture & Environmental Contexts, the architecture team behind the Langon Territorial Solidarity Hub, to present an exemplary project in sustainable construction for the Gironde Department. The building, designed with timber-frame walls insulated with straw, coated with clay-based earth, also incorporates raw earth bricks and local maritime pine panels. Far from being a purely aesthetic choice, this approach reflects a strong commitment to valuing natural resources and local know-how, while addressing major environmental, economic, and social challenges. This talk will highlight the rich collaboration between engineers and architects when technology serves meaningful projects. It will show how the complementarity of approaches allows for optimizing construction solutions, developing new practices, and sharing key values such as respect for living systems, collective intelligence, and territorial responsibility. This forum follows on from a workshop held in December 2023 in Épalinges, which brought together around twenty timber construction professionals in a setting free from project constraints. These rich discussions revealed the need to continue this reflection on a broader scale. The Langon PTS construction project will offer inspiring and concrete insight into these collective discussions, exemplifying what a virtuous, locally anchored, and future-oriented building site can be.
